Department of Defence recognises that there are many barriers to attracting, recruiting and creating an inclusive and accessible workplace for people with intellectual disability. The organisation needed to modify systems and processes in areas of recruitment, workplace adjustments and training to attract and increase employment opportunities for people with disability.
Defence has established two high quality employment programs for people with intellectual disability, the Inclusive Employment Program and Defence Administrative Assistance Program. These programs deliver on the intent to increase the representation of employees with disability across the organisation, by offering career opportunities and increases capability of the organisation.
The Defence disability employment programs are a sustainable approach in creating an inclusive workplace. The programs have provided critical capability support and customer service delivery directly to the organisation. Overall, Defence has increased the employment participation rates for people with disability and has made significant improvements to workplace adjustments.
