Brisbane’s vision is to become an accessible and inclusive New World City. As a local government organisation, there are opportunities for improvement for Brisbane City Council and the community in employing people with disability. Inclusion in the workforce has economic and social benefits for participants, their families, the community and businesses.
Delivering a workforce intervention enables people with disability to compete for real jobs – real inclusion. This requires real work opportunities which deliver real access to systems/processes/knowledge for people with disability and enables real experiences to team leaders and managers to become disability confident.
The organisation delivered an intervention that increased disability confidence, empowered participants to compete in recruitment and selection, and increased workforce participation of people with disability. It proved that people with disability are valuable employees and that reasonable adjustment is achievable as measured by participant outcomes, participant and stakeholder feedback and culture change.
