Qantas faced unprecedented challenges in the last couple of years (increased competition – domestically and internationally; record fuel bills and a high dollar). This resulted in significant losses, the need to transform the business and required an agile and flexible HR model to effectively support the transformation.
The ‘HR Assignment Model’ was introduced – revolutionising the deployment HR resources by prioritising business partnering and project needs, and matching capable HR resources to them as fixed term projects. Put simply, HR expertise is now allocated in the same way as capital is, that is, as one of Qantas' most valuable resources.
The success is evident in record financial results, high customer feedback and record levels of engagement (the business and HR). In addition, a genuine ‘whole of business’ perspective and accelerated career development have resulted for HR from the more frequent movement of HR resources.
