Australia has a well-documented shortage of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals.

The STEM challenge in Australia is characterised by:

  • Shortfall of STEM professionals
  • Negative perception of the IT industry contributing to low take up of study
  • Poor gender diversity in STEM
  • Limited opportunities for young people in the IT industry

Go4IT is a week-long work experience program for female high school students designed to:

  • Broaden perspectives of IT – providing insight into the technology industry and TCS
  • Challenge gender stereotypes – role-modelling women in STEM
  • Develop technical skills – coding workshops and business challenges requiring the application of technology
  • Enhance employability skills

Students were surveyed before and after participating in the Go4IT program. The quantitative and quantitative results have been positive on all indicators over a three-year period:

  • Increased interest to study IT (89%)
  • Increased interest to pursue a career in IT (91%)
  • Changed perceptions of gender in IT (100%)
  • Increased confidence and employability skills (95%)
