In the Westpac biennial employee Diversity and Flexibility survey, carried out in 2012, results indicated that employees who identify as LGBTI were less engaged than their peers. Results also showed that they did not find their workplace an inclusive environment to bring their whole selves to.
Westpac focused on transforming its organisation into the best place to work for LGBTI employees by building a safe and respectful work environment that values all diversity, thereby creating a culture of equality and inclusion. The Group approached this through empowering employees, engaging senior leaders and internal/external organisation commitment.
Westpac has seen a significant uplift in engagement from LGBTI and non-LGBTI employees, an increase in LGBTI inclusion benchmarking and increased EAG membership and activity, including ally representation. In addition, business units have embedded LGBTI inclusion into their diversity strategies, many committing their teams to mandatory inclusive language training.
